Miss Akbar specialises in assisted conception techniques, fertility preserving keyhole surgeries, endometriosis and all aspects of fertility treatments. Miss Akbar has special interest in male factor subfertility, implantation failure, poly cystic ovaries/PCOS,Fibroids / blood less myomectomies, adolescent gynaecology.

Miss Thangamma Katimada is a Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology with 15 years of experience in the NHS
She is a specialist in Early Pregnancy, Acute Gynaecology. She also practices General Gynaecology.

Educational Qualifications ( MBBS , MD , MRCOG )

Miss Katimada completed her MBBS from Bangalore Medical College in India in 1995. She was awarded a gold medal for obtaining the highest marks in Microbiology in Bangalore University She went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at St John’s Medical College Bangalore ( INDIA ) . She subsequently worked for 3 years in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit in a Premier National Institute in India. (JIPMER)

She came to the UK in 2005 and completed her Speciality Training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in July 2013. She completed her exam towards membership of the Royal College of Obstetrician and Gynaecologists in 2007. She received a special mention from the President of the College for her performance in the examination.

Experience at Bedford Hospital

Miss Katimada joined the consultant body at the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Unit at Bedford Hospital in September 2013.
She established the Early Pregnancy Unit at Bedford Hospital. She has a vast experience in this field, having trained for 2 years in early pregnancy and acute gynaecology scanning which included a period of 6 months at the Early Pregnancy and Acute Gynaecology unit at Kings College Hospital London In addition to providing her expertise in scanning, she established the treatment protocols and the governance to assure the quality of the service. She has also trained specialist nurses and doctors in early pregnancy scanning.

With her expertise in gynaecological scanning she has provided a one stop gynaecological service to women seeking care for a variety of gynaecological problems including

Fibroid Uterus
Pelvic Pain
Vaginal discharge
Menstrual Irregularities
Post-Menopausal Bleeding

She has a special interest in perineal care and under her leadership, the Obstetric Unit in Bedford Hospital implemented the Care Bundle initiated by the RCOG to reduce the risk of injuries during child birth which involve the anal sphincters. Under her leadership the unit has seen a reduction such injuries from 4% to less than 2%. She also delivers care to women who have problems from injuries to the perineum after child birth.

She has developed and introduced a number of services at Bedford Hospital and has received 4 Clinical Excellence Awards.
She has a keen interest in teaching and has won 3 awards for excellence in teaching from the University of Cambridge and University of Leicester.
